February 28


Most of today's was focused on teaching you how to write a WRA I (3 source analysis in-class writing assignment). I gave you a sample WRA I today in class and gave you a booklet on Analyzing Political Cartoons. Please remember that your Unit 1 WRA I is on Friday and your Chapter 3-4 Test is on Wednesday. Please see the study guide for this test here.


We started looking at Keynesian economic theory in greater detail today. Specifically we looked at monetary and fiscal policy that are a part of demand-side economics. We made connections back to the boom and bust cycle when talking about these concepts as well. We will revisit the boom and bust cycle tomorrow and the Keynesian economic response to various economic situations tomorrow. We also watched a video today called "Boom and Bust" which is part of the BBC 20th Century History series. As you watched this video you were to complete a video question sheet. I did a homework check on your "Philosophies of Industrialism" booklets today. Please remember that your Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions are due on Wednesday.

Today you had an opportunity to lessen your homework load. I gave you an activity booklet called "The Philosophies of Industrialism", which is due on Monday. If you finished the activities in this booklet you could have moved on to working on your Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions, which are due on Wednesday.


Your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment was due today, it looks like most of you handed it in on time. If you didn't hand it in on time, it's 10% off per day it's late. We started our film study of "Bend It Like Beckham". While you were watching this video you were to complete some listening activities and comprehension activities. After we finish the video tomorrow, I'll talk about to complete the later part of the film study by applying key concepts from Unit 1 material to events that occured in the film. Next Wednesday, you have your Chapter 3-4 Test. Please see the study guide below (it's on the wiki as well).

  • Know the key terms from Chapter 3-4
  • Be able to answer the Questions for Inquiry in Chapters 3-4 (they appear on p.49, p.53, p.58, p.73, p.80)
  • Know relevant case studies from Chapters 3-4: the Francophones, the Aborigines and the Lubicon, as well as other relevant examples related to assimilation, marginalization, accommodation and integration

I introduced you to the business cycle (boom and bust cycle) today. This is a concept that we will be building upon later in the course when we look at Keynesian economics and the monetary and fiscal policy responses to the various stages along the business cycle. If you missed class today, please make sure that you get these notes from a friend. We also went through a PowerPoint lecture called "Responding to Classical Liberalism and Industrialization". I have already sent this lecture to your e-mail accounts. Also, when you are checking your e-mail today you'll find that I have sent you notes on classical liberalism, Adam Smith and the market economy. Please print these notes off, read them, highlight and annotate them. I gave you the Chapter 4 Worksheet today. The Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions are due on Wednesday, March 2nd.


You wrote your Chapter 1-2 Test today. I gave you most of the period to do this. Please remember that your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment is due tomorrow. Also, please remember that as part of this assignment you need to write a written description to go along with the concept map. Please use the following guidelines when writing this description. The big theme for Unit 1 is the impact of globalization on identity. Have an introductory paragraph that centers around the increasing interconnections and interdependencies that we are experiencing as a result of globalization. What impact does social globalization have on individual and collective identity? (2nd paragraph) What impact does economic globalization have on individual and collective identity? (3rd paragraph) What impact does political globalization have on individual and collective identity? (4th paragraph) Don't forget to include sub-concepts of these different types of globalization and their impacts on the different types of identity. Don't forget to have a concluding paragraph. You're looking a 5 x 5 structure on this written description. Please do not describe the steps involved in making your illustrated concept map either! I don't want to read about the various steps in the making your concept map ("first, I bought some poster paper and glue. I went home. I wrote the word 'globalization' in the middle of the poster"--this is not what I want the written description to be like).

I went through a PowerPoint presentation today that covered content from Chapters 4 and 5 in your textbook. I will be sending it to you by e-mail tonight. It is also available for viewing on the wiki as well under Unit 1 Presentations. Please remember that you have your Chapter 1-2 Test tomorrow, please see the study guide here. Also, please remember that your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment is due on Thursday. Please check the February 16th post for advice on how to cite your image sources in APA format.


I gave you back your Unit 1 essay marking sheets today and your most current mark in 30-1 as well. If you want to discuss your essay with me, it must be during tutorial time (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:15 to 8:45). I went through various concepts today: I reviewed the political-economic grid once again, then we looked at liberalism and make connections between the principles of liberalism and the economic and political foundation of classical liberalism. We also started looking at basic economics, basic economic systems, basic economic questions and basic economic values associated with the economic spectrum. We'll look at the business cycle tomorrow as well as the ideological response to classical liberalism and industrialization.

I finished off the lecture on "The Development of Classical Liberalism" today. I have sent this PowerPoint presentation to you already, so please print it off and add it to your notes. Whenever you print off these presentations, please print them off 4-6 slides per page. After I completed this lecture I gave you time to work on your Chapter 3 Questions in class. These questions are due on Tuesday February 22nd. Please make sure that you read Chapter 4 before next class. Have a great long weekend!


I talked a little bit about the class wiki today, so please remember to check your e-mail (inbox and junk mail) for the invitation to the wiki. I gave you class time to work on Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions today, these are due on Tuesday February 22nd. Please remember your Chapter 1-2 Test is on February 23rd, please see study guide here. Your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment is due on Thursday February 24th, this is your last weekend to work on this project, so try to get the concept web completed.



I've had a few questions about how to reference images fromt he Internet, so I'm just posting a little step-by-step example here to give an idea how to do it.




Most of you will probably use Google for your image search. Just type in your image search term.




A bunch of different images will pop up. Just click on one that you like. Go to the website where the image is hosted.



Right click on the image and then click on "Properties" and then you'll get the address of the image.




The pop up dialogue box will look something like this.



This is where it's nice to have either Microsoft Word 2007 or 2010 because it has a built-in reference tab that makes it easy to cite your sources. Click on the References tab, make sure it is set to APA. If you click on Insert Citation or Bibliography, you'll get a pop up that will look something like this. I've put in the information for the image that I used in this example.

I covered a few concepts from Chapter 3 that sometimes cause students problems. I went through what the following concepts meant: CRTC, CBC/SRC, CAVCO, CanCon, and cultural protectionism. We also brainstormed a list of favorite TV shows and musical acts to see if our list matched up to Canadian content requirements. I did a homework check on your Chapter 3 Key Terms and Questions today, and I assigned your Chapter 4 Key Terms and Questions (due on Tuesday, February 22nd). Please remember that your Illustrated Concept Map is due on Thursday, February 24th, get working on it! Your Chapter 1-2 Quiz is on Wednesday, February 23rd, please see the study guide below. We tied up some loose ends with our film study of "Whale Rider" and looking at the impact of globalization on the collective identity of the Maori. We started to move into Chapter 3 material today by looking at what exactly media TNCs are, the products they produce and we looked at a few examples of large media transnational corporations like News Corporation, Viacom, Comcast, and the Walt Disney Company. If you missed class today, you'll have to get these notes from a classmate. Your Chapter 3 Key Terms and Questions are due on Tuesday, February 15th. Please make sure that you also read Chapter 3. Please remember that your Illustrated Concept Map Assignment is due on Thursday, February 24th. This coming weekend is your last weekend to work on this project. This is a demanding project, it is not something that you want to put off until the night before it is due. Don't procrastinate!


I shared with you the results of your Chapter 1-2 Test and your Unit 1 Final Exam. Please note that I fully expect a large number of you to wipe out your Unit 1 Final Exam with your Trial Final at the end of the semester. Make sure that the Unit 1 Final Exam is your lowest test result this semester and have improved results for the remainder of the semester. We started looking at Unit 2 material today with the "Development of Classical Liberalism" PowerPoint. I will finish this presentation on Wednesday, and I will e-mail it out at that point. While I was going through this lecture you were to take notes on a note-taking chart and in your notebooks as well. If you missed class today you'll need to get these notes from a classmate and the chart from the file folder at the front of the room. Please read Chapter 3 and complete the Chapter 3 Key Terms for Wednesday. Please remember that you have your Unit 1 WRA II (Essay) tomorrow in the Blenheim Room, please go there directly. Remember, this assignment is due on Thursday, February 24th, but it will take a lot of time to do it right. Don't procrastinate!




You wrote your Unit 1 Final Exam today in class which took most of the period. You got your Unit 1 Essay Question Sheet after the exam. We finished off our film study of "Sicko" today, but I didn't really have enough time to get into the details of how health care has changed in the United States with the Obama administration. Hopefully, I get a chance tomorrow after you finish off your Chapter 1-2 Test. The study guide for the Chapter 1-2 Test is below, and the study guide for the Unit 1 Final Exam is here.




The Chapter 1-2 Test is on Thursday, February 10th. It is a mixed format test, it will have a matching section and a short answer section. Here is what you should review/study for this test:


  • Chapter 1 and 2 Key Terms/Concepts and the Supplementary Key Terms from the Unit 1 Worksheet
  • be able to answer any of the questions from the Unit 1 Worksheet (hopefully you have quality answers to study from!)
  • you must know the 19th century political spectrum and the 20th century political spectrum
  • know similarities and differences between communism and fascism
  • be able to label political and economic spectrums and the values associated with these ideologies
  • be able to label the political-economic grid and know examples of the ideologies in the quadrants (study the Ideology Notes and the notes I gave you in class)
  • know the differences between individualism and collectivism, be able to apply your understanding of these concepts
  • know the key ideas associated with Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau (for example, view of the nature of human beings, etc.)

I gave you most of today's period to work on clearing your homework schedule up. You could have worked on your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions (due tomorrow) or your Global Connections Essay (also due tomorrow), or your Chapter 2 Key Terms and Questions (due Friday). Please make sure that you have actually read Chapters 1 and 2! You have a test on these two chapters coming up. Your World Geography Test is on Friday as well, please see the study here. Most of today's class was spent in a small group brainstorming session dealing with the Illustrated Concept Map Assignment. This assignment is due on Thursday, February 24th. Your Global Connections Essay is due on Thursday, February 10th as are your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions. Your World Geography Test is on Friday, February 11th. This test will test you on countries and 10 key capital cities around the world. Please see the study guide here.


I tested to see if you knew the principles of individualism and the principles of collectivism. These principles could be used potentially as arguments on an essay. I showed you an essay outline of a first paragraph on an essay with an individualism vs. collectivism theme, which is similar to what you'll see on your Unit 1 WRA II (Essay). I did a homework check on the Individualism vs. Collectivism booklet today. Please remember that your Chapter 2 Key Terms and Questions are due tomorrow. I gave you your first writing assignment today: the Global Connections Essay. In this informative essay, you are to answer the following essay question: What are my impacts on the world? You are really trying to personalize your essay by indicating what are some social, economic, political and environmental effects that you have on the world. What impact is globalization having on you, and what impact do have on globalization (in other words, how do you contribute to globalization)? Are you having a positive or negative impact on the world? This Global Connections Essay is due on Thursday. Your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions are due on Thursday as well. Your World Geography Test is on Friday, February 11th, please see the study guide here (scroll down to find it).


I went through how to be successful on a WRA II (in-class position paper) for most of today's class. You have a copy of the "Recipe for Success" and "Analyzing Quotes" which I think will be really helpful in preparing for essays. Tomorrow, we'll look at writing an outline for an essay that will be similar to your Unit 1 WRA II (you write this on Tuesday of next week). I also gave you time to work on your Individualism vs. Collectivism booklets. These booklets are due tomorrow. Please remember that simple "yes" or "no" answers are NOT enough on the last chart activity in that booklet. Your Chapter 2 Key Terms and Questions are due on Wednesday. I did a homework check on your 25 item chart at the beginning of class and then gave it right back to you so you could use to complete your Global Connections Map Assignment. I gave you the directions for this assignment in class, please see them again below. Your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions are due on Thursday, February 10th (if I were you, I'd try to get this done this weekend if you haven't already finished it). You have your World Geography Test next Friday, please see the study guide below.



Here are some reminder instructions for the map:
  • People on the map should be represented by circles, color the circles and make sure there is a number beside each circle
  • Make sure that you have colored and labelled the 25 different countries (color the entire country), these countries represent the 25 items that you found for homework and put into your chart
  • Make sure that you have labeled every country that you or a classmate has a connection to
  • Choose different colors to represent your different categories (food, clothing, electronics, entertainment)
  • Make sure that you have a detailed key on the back of your map (reproducing your 25 item chart's information with color codes for the different categories and Global Bingo information)
  • Make sure that you have a title for your map
  • Make sure that you have a simplified key on the front of your map (color code for the different categories, and people)
  • No border is necessary
  • No compass rose is necessary
  • You don't need to color the oceans or bodies of water (if you feel the need to color them, simply do a blue outline of the land masses that touch the major oceans and seas)
  • Don't forget to color ALL of a country (for example, Alaska is part of the USA and should be colored, don't forget to color the islands in the Arctic Ocean that are part of Canada if you have a connection to Canada)

Your global connections maps are due on Monday. Please make sure that you follow the directions! I will be sending you a copy of the map in PDF format this afternoon, so if you don't get the e-mail message, please let me know!


This test will take place on Friday, February 11th. It is simply a country and capital cities identification test. You will be given a world map with certain countries, capital cities, and places identified and you need to be able to write out what country it is. Here are the countries that may appear on the test:
  • any of the EU countries (there are 27 countries in the EU)
  • any of the NATO countries (there's some overlap here with the EU, but not all EU countries are members of NATO)
  • any of the G8 countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom
  • full members of MERCOSUR: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and other associate members or countries that are achieving membership in MERCOSUR, such as: Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Ecuador
  • to ask you to know ALL of the countries in the African Union would be cruel, so we'll focus on countries that came up last year or will likely be in the news this year: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan
  • other very important countries that will be in the news this year, or that we'll be talking about, or get mentioned in your textbook: Cuba, Mexico, China, India, Myanmar (Burma), Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel
  • **BIG HINT: if a country is a member of a few of these international organizations then there's a STRONG possibility that they will be on the test!!**

We played a little "Global Bingo" today as well (don't lose those sheets, you'll need them for a subsequent mapping assignment). You have some homework tonight: you must create a 25 item chart (please see instructions below). I gave you some time to work on your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions today, these will be due in one week's time. You will have a World Geography Test next Friday, the study guide for this test will go up tomorrow on the blog.

25 Item Chart Instructions:

  • find 25 items from 25 different countries (you can't have 5 items from one country!)
  • find items from any of the following categories: food, clothing, electronics, household goods, entertainment, and miscellaneous (if it doesn't fit into any of the previous categories)
  • don't just find items from one category (for example, 25 food items)
  • try to find 4-6 items from each category
  • collect your information about your items in a 3-column chart (item, country, category)
  • don't assume that an item is from a particular country (for example, a Sony PS3 may be manufactured in Indonesia, Malaysia or South Korea, that is the information that we want
  • for entertainment, for example a CD (or MP3) we want to know where the recording artist is from, not where the CD was manufactured, this will better illustrate social globalization
    when you are collecting the information for your chart, number off the items (1-25) and have the categorized separate (in other words, the first 5 items on your chart should belong to the same category, etc.)
  • the more organized your chart is, the easier it will be to put that information on to a map!

I did a homework check on your friendly letters at the beginning of class. I want to assure you that these letters are not for marks at all, I simply want to get a writing sample from you and possible get to know you better. I went through a PowerPoint presentation today called "Introducing Government". I have sent this presentation to you, so please check your e-mail accounts (for Hotmail users, please check your junk mail folders) and print off this presentation. Also, please respond to my e-mail message so I know that the e-mail distribution list is working. I gave you some time in class to work on your Chapter 1 Key Terms and Questions (which are due on Friday). Please make sure that you read Chapter 1 in the textbook as well.


For most of today's class we went through an activity in which we looked at different definitions of globalization and classified those definitions as having a positive, negative or neutral view of the globalization process. We also looked at various images associated with globalization and what their connection was to globalization. Here's a link to Kiva, so you can have a look at what micro loans are so you'll have an idea of how your money can have a dramatic impact on someone's life in a less developed country. I went through a quick self-introduction and talked a little bit about what to expect over the course of this semester. I gave you a list of key dates (exams, tests, quizzes, essays and writing assignments) that you should have written into your agenda or notes. I went through the course outline and academic integrity policy as well. Please check the classroom rules and expectations of behavior and rules for posting on the blog. These classroom rules can be found on the blog in yesterday's post. Your homework assignment tonight is writing a friendly letter addressed to me in which you tell me a little bit about yourself (family, extracurricular activities, sports, TV shows that you like, movies, musical interests) just so I get a sense of who you are as a person and what your goals might be for this semester. The friendly letter is due tomorrow, and it can be hand written or typed.

These classroom rules can be found on the blog in yesterday's post. Your homework assignment tonight is writing a friendly letter addressed to me in which you tell me a little bit about yourself (family, extracurricular activities, sports, TV shows that you like, movies, musical interests) just so I get a sense of who you are as a person and what your goals might be for this semester. Where do you see yourself after high school? What are your career aspirations? The friendly letter is due tomorrow, and it can be hand written or typed.
