Social 20-1

We finished off looking at the Holocaust today by watching excerpts from "Schindler's List". We then moved on to our final topic of World War II, the usage of atomic bombs against Japan to end the war. We watched an HBO documentary called "White Light Black Rain" which covered the bombing and destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As you watched the film you should have been completing the film study questions from your Unit 2 study booklet. I did a class check on this film study. Tomorrow, we'll be watching a CNN special called "Scream Bloody Murder" to look at genocide in the 20th and 21st centuries. You'll also be writing your Unit 2 WRA II Essay tomorrow from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm in the Blenheim Room. Don't forget that your Chapter 7 Key Terms and Questions are due on Monday, and your Chapter 8 Key Terms and Questions are due on Tuesday. Your Chapter 7-8 Test is on Tuesday (July 23rd), please see the study guide here (scroll down to find it). You wrote your Civil Rights Movement Test for part of the period today. I then delivered a PowerPoint lecture on "LBJ and the Great Society". This presentation should already be on the wiki under American Presidents. Hopefully, you'll finish off this lecture tomorrow. Please remember that for April 16th to 18th that I'll be in Toronto for SOMA, so you need to go directly to Room 121 for class. You're writing a Paper 3 on Thursday. I also returned homework to you.

We watched a couple of videos from the BBC 20th Century History series today. One was called "The Road to Berlin" and the other "Cold War Confrontations". I also covered the Korean War today as best I could. I gave you the Korean War notes today that went along with the PowerPoint.

We met in Room 121 to watch an A & E Biography of Malcolm X. Please remember that you have your Civil Rights Movement Test on Monday. You also have your Paper 3 on the Civil Rights Movement on Thursday, April 18th.

Make sure that you review your IB command terms again! Here are some possible questions from previous IB Exams:

• What were the successes of the civil rights movement from 1950-1964 and how were those successes obtained?
• What were the successes and failures of the civil rights movement between 1954 and 1964?
• Explain the development of the civil rights movement in the 1950’s.

We watched a documentary video from the History's Turning Points series called "The Atomic Bomb" today, and we also started watching "White Light/Black Rain" which covered the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We'll finish off the video next week. As you were watching "White Light/Black Rain" you were supposed to be completing a film study sheet.

We started watching "White Light/Black Rain" today in class. After the exam break we will continue to examine the decision to use the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We will have a class debate on this very topic. If you are a Diploma student, please remember that your Extended Essay is due on January 31st. Please hand in two copies of the EE to your supervisor so that we may be able to keep a copy of it on file.

I had you fill out the scantrons for your final exam today. Unfortunately, I had a meeting to attend to at the Area I office which meant that we couldn't play Jeopardy today. Sorry about that! I will send you the PowerPoint Jeopardy game that we were going to play today to your e-mail accounts. You watched the documentary "Addicted to Plastic" instead. Please remember that Part B of your Final Exam is on January 16th at 1-3 p.m. in the Main Gym. Study !!Don't be late!

As you can see from the post above, I had to attend a meeting at the Area I office today, so unfortunately I was unable to see your TOK Moral Dilemma presentations firsthand so as a result Mr. Johnson had to cover my class for me. You got your Paper 2 Topic 3 essays back today. You also had time to work in your groups for your TOK Moral Dilemmas presentations. You're doing the TOK Moral Dilemmas presentations in class tomorrow.

I did a homework check on your Chapter 18 and 19 Key Terms and Questions. We finished watching the movie "Contagion" today. After watching the movie you had to make Jeopardy questions for tomorrow's review game. Please send your Jeopardy questions to my CBE e-mail address. This is a homework check that needs to be completed tonight before 9 pm.

I showed you an excerpt from the film "Saving Private Ryan" today to illustrate the conditions on the battlefield during the Normandy invasion. Next, I showed you a video from the History's Turning Points series called "The Atomic Bomb" which detailed the creation of the atomic bomb and its usage to end WWII. Tomorrow, we'll get into a film study of "White Light/Black Rain".
